The beautiful city of Las Palmas Gran Canaria calls its capital, has been voted to be one of the best cities to live in. Probably because it has the cleanest air of all Spanish cities and the best climate in the world. Some people claim that it also has the best beach of the island: the Las Canateras Beach.
Las Palmas is the southernmost city of the European Union. With an area of about 100 km2 it is home to approximately 400.000 people. Its impressive harbour Puerto de la Luz is one of the biggest and most important in the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the identically named province, attracts its visitors with a lot of seeming opposites: tradition and modernism, city and sea, culture and leisure.
Despite of its clouds that are present very often and its nickname „la Panza de burro“ – the donkey’s belly” it is said to offer the best climate in the world. The average temperature never goes lower than 14 degrees during night time. Its layout is fascinating as well. The city is framed by two beaches, Las Alcaravaneras in the east and Las Canteras in the west.
Discovering does not only mean to visit its sites but also to walk through its not so touristic areas. In the little squares and lanes where the Canarios live you feel the real life of the places and its inhabitants.
Las Palmas Gran Canaria districts
Las Palmas Gran Canaria itself mirrors the whole island’s character of variety. There are the old quarters of Triana with its beautiful and famous pedestrian area and Vegueta where you find the cathedral and the town hall in the south of the city. They show an entirely different face than Alcaravaneras with its small houses and the view of the harbour. This again is totally different from the elegant Ciudad Jardin where you can find impressive villas and gardens.
Another part of the city is Santa Catalina with the famous Mesa y Lopez street. It starts at the impressive Plaza de Espana. This street is a must for everyone who likes to go shopping and can afford it. Around Parque Santa Catalina you can find numerous bars and restaurants. That is a good area go out in the evenings.
A small peninsula you can find at the end of Las Canteras: La Isleta. It used to be a fisherman’s village. With its narrow lanes and its lighthouse it offers you another impression of the beautiful city of Las Palmas. Las Coloradas in the northern part of La Isleta gives you a stunning view not only of the city but also of the sea and the mountains of the island.
And last but not least you have to enjoy the beautiful beach and promenade of Las Canteras. It leads from La Isleta in the north to the modern concert hall Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.
At Las Canteras you find a whole variety of hotels, restaurants and bars and of course the beautiful beach. Here you can not only lie in the sun but also swim in the ocean and relax in the sand. Artists show their works at the beach. People lie in the sun. Children play and swim. Tourists as well as Canarios like to spend time in this inviting part of the city.
Las Palmas Gran Canaria combines the amenities of a modern city with the charming atmosphere of the olden days and the attraction of the ocean and it should be a must on every tourist’s holiday agenda.
